What happens when you convert QOI to JPEG 2000?

Encoding mode

JPEG 2000 supports reversible lossless and irreversible lossy coding. A JP2 container, an extended JPX/JPF file and a raw J2K codestream are related but not identical file structures. The output uses the implemented still-image encoder; file size depends on the pixels and format.

Sample precision & colour

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Is QOI → JPEG 2000 right for you?

Good choice when

  • JPEG 2000 fits your delivery use: Specialised scalable imaging.
  • You need a transparency-capable destination and will check its supported variant.
  • Your receiving application supports the required JPEG 2000 variant.
  • You can validate the destination’s sample precision and colour interpretation.

Probably not when

  • You assume format-level alpha support guarantees matching transparent edges.
  • You need a guaranteed output file size or archival pixel equality. Encoder settings do not guarantee either.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

QOI to JPEG 2000 conversion details

Transparency representation
The implemented target supports alpha. Display-pixel processing can round translucent samples; archival sample equality is not promised.

Compression
QOI: Lossless → JPEG 2000: Lossy & lossless QOI: QOI preserves 8-bit RGB/RGBA samples losslessly. Reducing 16-bit data or discarding profiles and metadata before encoding is outside that guarantee. JPEG 2000: JPEG 2000 supports reversible lossless and irreversible lossy coding. A JP2 container, an extended JPX/JPF file and a raw J2K codestream are related but not identical file structures.
Transparency

Colour depth

Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
