What happens when you convert QOI to TGA?

Lossless sample storage

TGA can be uncompressed or losslessly RLE-compressed. Attribute bits and version-2 alpha semantics matter; the fourth byte must not automatically be treated as opacity. TGA can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. This applies after rendering and sample conversion: it does not guarantee preservation of source precision, colour space or document structure, and cannot undo earlier losses.

Is QOI → TGA right for you?

Good choice when

  • TGA fits your delivery use: Textures & graphics assets.
  • You need a transparency-capable destination and will check its supported variant.
  • You need lossless storage of the rendered samples supported by TGA.
  • You can validate the destination’s sample precision and colour interpretation.

Probably not when

  • You assume format-level alpha support guarantees matching transparent edges.
  • You expect lossless encoding to restore lost details or editing structure.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

QOI to TGA conversion details

Transparency representation
The implemented target supports alpha. Display-pixel processing can round translucent samples; archival sample equality is not promised.
Lossless sample storage
TGA can be uncompressed or losslessly RLE-compressed. Attribute bits and version-2 alpha semantics matter; the fourth byte must not automatically be treated as opacity. TGA can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. Metadata & colour

Compression
QOI: Lossless → TGA: Lossless QOI: QOI preserves 8-bit RGB/RGBA samples losslessly. Reducing 16-bit data or discarding profiles and metadata before encoding is outside that guarantee. TGA: TGA can be uncompressed or losslessly RLE-compressed. Attribute bits and version-2 alpha semantics matter; the fourth byte must not automatically be treated as opacity.
Transparency
Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
Colour depth
QOI: 8 bits/sample → TGA: Indexed / gray / RGB / RGBA
Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
Metadata
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Common questions

Does lossless output mean an unchanged source?

TGA can be uncompressed or losslessly RLE-compressed. Attribute bits and version-2 alpha semantics matter; the fourth byte must not automatically be treated as opacity. TGA can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
