What happens when you convert Pentax PEF to GIF?

RAW development

Pentax PEF needs camera- and file-aware development to produce a rendered GIF image. White balance, exposure, camera colour interpretation and, where applicable, demosaicing determine that rendering. The destination does not retain the original RAW development latitude. No development settings or camera support are implemented yet.

GIF palette & alpha limits

GIF uses at most 256 colours per GIF colour table and a transparent palette index rather than partial alpha. Richer colours and translucent edges need quantisation or compositing. Palette choice and dithering depend on the future engine; lossless GIF compression does not reverse palette reduction.

Is Pentax PEF → GIF right for you?

Good choice when

  • GIF fits your delivery use: Simple palette animations.
  • You need a developed image for a non-RAW application.
  • A limited palette and binary transparency are acceptable.
  • You can validate the destination’s sample precision and colour interpretation.

Probably not when

  • You need the original sensor data and freedom to redevelop it.
  • You need smooth photographic gradients or partial transparency.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

Pentax PEF to GIF conversion details

Sample precision & colour
Source and target sample models can differ in precision, channel layout, colour space and transfer function. Lossless compression only preserves the samples actually encoded; a precision reduction or colour conversion can already change them. The future engine defines numeric mapping, orientation and colour conversion; canonical depth facts are listed below where available.
Metadata & colour
Format support does not guarantee that an export preserves metadata or colour profiles. Retention and colour handling depend on the future converter; its engine is not implemented yet.
Compression
Pentax PEF: Depends on variant → GIF: Lossless Pentax PEF: The K-5 II manual documents PEF/DNG selection. Precision, compression and vendor metadata need the specific camera documentation; do not generalise a single model’s settings to every PEF. A native file may retain manufacturer information that another processing workflow interprets differently. GIF: LZW compression is lossless for the stored palette indices. Colour reduction before encoding is not lossless for an arbitrary RGB source.

Common questions

Will GIF still be an editable camera RAW?

Pentax PEF needs camera- and file-aware development to produce a rendered GIF image. White balance, exposure, camera colour interpretation and, where applicable, demosaicing determine that rendering. The destination does not retain the original RAW development latitude. No development settings or camera support are implemented yet.

Why can GIF lose colours despite lossless compression?

GIF uses at most 256 colours per GIF colour table and a transparent palette index rather than partial alpha. Richer colours and translucent edges need quantisation or compositing. Palette choice and dithering depend on the future engine; lossless GIF compression does not reverse palette reduction.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Source and target sample models can differ in precision, channel layout, colour space and transfer function. Lossless compression only preserves the samples actually encoded; a precision reduction or colour conversion can already change them. The future engine defines numeric mapping, orientation and colour conversion; canonical depth facts are listed below where available.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

Pentax PEF: Capture metadata → GIF: Comments, Application extensions. Which fields are copied, rewritten or omitted will depend on the future engine; retention is not implemented yet.
