What happens when you convert PAM to SVG?

Raster image inside SVG

Output is a self-contained SVG containing one lossless 8-bit RGBA PNG at the developed image dimensions. It preserves rendered transparency, but creates no vector paths, editable text or new detail. Animation, layers, extra channels and original metadata are not retained.

Multiple source images

The first supported Netpbm image is decoded; concatenated images are not exported as a sequence.

Sample precision & colour

Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.

Is PAM → SVG right for you?

Good choice when

  • SVG fits your delivery use: Diagrams & scalable symbols.
  • You need a portable SVG with embedded pixels.
  • You can choose the source image or part needed for delivery.
  • You can validate the destination’s sample precision and colour interpretation.

Probably not when

  • You need resolution-independent paths or vector editing.
  • You require a complete collection, page set or multipart round trip.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

Compression
PAM: Uncompressed → SVG: Not a pixel codec PAM: Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning. SVG: SVG describes geometry rather than using a lossy/lossless pixel codec. XML can be compressed for transport, but rasterization is a separate operation that fixes resolution and can discard editability.

Dimensions
Conversion keeps the decoded image dimensions unless you edit or resize it. Orientation is applied by supported decoders. ICO fits the image into one selected square size; PDF page layout and rendering DPI are configurable. Device, memory and codec limits still apply.
Metadata

Common questions

Does SVG output trace vector paths?

Output is a self-contained SVG containing one lossless 8-bit RGBA PNG at the developed image dimensions. It preserves rendered transparency, but creates no vector paths, editable text or new detail. Animation, layers, extra channels and original metadata are not retained.

Will every source image be exported?

The first supported Netpbm image is decoded; concatenated images are not exported as a sequence.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

This output writer does not preserve source EXIF, GPS or XMP metadata blocks. Original ICC profiles are not copied. Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.
