What happens when you convert PDF to SVG?

Raster image inside SVG

Output is a self-contained SVG containing one lossless 8-bit RGBA PNG at the developed image dimensions. It preserves rendered transparency, but creates no vector paths, editable text or new detail. Animation, layers, extra channels and original metadata are not retained.

Page rendering

Selected PDF pages are raster-rendered into the image collection; All selects every page. DPI controls raster resolution. Text, vectors and interactions become pixels; embedded images are not extracted and searchable text is not retained. Password-protected PDFs are unsupported.

Sample precision & colour

Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.

Is PDF → SVG right for you?

Good choice when

  • SVG fits your delivery use: Diagrams & scalable symbols.
  • You need a portable SVG with embedded pixels.
  • You need a raster preview of a document page.
  • You can validate the destination’s sample precision and colour interpretation.

Probably not when

  • You need resolution-independent paths or vector editing.
  • Selectable text, vector objects or document navigation must remain.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

Compression
PDF: Depends on variant → SVG: Not a pixel codec PDF: PDF has no single compression quality. Different streams may use lossless or lossy filters; page rasterization can remove document structure even when the resulting pixels are encoded losslessly. SVG: SVG describes geometry rather than using a lossy/lossless pixel codec. XML can be compressed for transport, but rasterization is a separate operation that fixes resolution and can discard editability.

Dimensions
Conversion keeps the decoded image dimensions unless you edit or resize it. Orientation is applied by supported decoders. ICO fits the image into one selected square size; PDF page layout and rendering DPI are configurable. Device, memory and codec limits still apply.
Metadata

Common questions

Does SVG output trace vector paths?

Output is a self-contained SVG containing one lossless 8-bit RGBA PNG at the developed image dimensions. It preserves rendered transparency, but creates no vector paths, editable text or new detail. Animation, layers, extra channels and original metadata are not retained.

Is PDF conversion the same as image extraction?

Selected PDF pages are raster-rendered into the image collection; All selects every page. DPI controls raster resolution. Text, vectors and interactions become pixels; embedded images are not extracted and searchable text is not retained. Password-protected PDFs are unsupported.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

This output writer does not preserve source EXIF, GPS or XMP metadata blocks. Original ICC profiles are not copied. Rendered SDR output uses 8-bit display pixels; source precision and original ICC profiles are not retained. Colour handling depends on the decoder and supported source variant.
