Advanced options
  • Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
  • Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
  • Self-contained static shapes only. Convert text to paths; scripts, images and external resources are not supported.

What happens when you convert SVG to PGM?

Vectors become pixels

Self-contained static shapes only. Convert text to paths; scripts, images and external resources are not supported.

Grayscale output

Colour is converted to grayscale using linear-sRGB luminance and the sRGB transfer curve. Colour channels and transparency are not retained.

Opaque output

Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.

Lossless sample storage

Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning. PGM can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. This applies after rendering and sample conversion: it does not guarantee preservation of source precision, colour space or document structure, and cannot undo earlier losses.

Is SVG → PGM right for you?

Good choice when

  • PGM fits your delivery use: Grayscale images & masks.
  • You need a fixed-resolution raster asset.
  • Your processing pipeline explicitly needs grayscale samples.
  • An opaque image is acceptable for your destination.

Probably not when

  • You need editable paths, text or resolution-independent scaling.
  • Colour distinctions carry information you need to retain.
  • You need cutouts or translucent edges for compositing.
  • You expect lossless encoding to restore lost details or editing structure.

SVG to PGM conversion details

Sample precision & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Metadata & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Compression
SVG: Not a pixel codec → PGM: Uncompressed SVG: SVG describes geometry rather than using a lossy/lossless pixel codec. XML can be compressed for transport, but rasterization is a separate operation that fixes resolution and can discard editability. PGM: Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning.
Transparency
Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
Animation
Still image output. Animated files use only the first frame; animation is not preserved.
Colour depth
PGM: maxval up to 65535
Vector graphics

Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
Metadata
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Common questions

Will PGM remain scalable vector artwork?

Self-contained static shapes only. Convert text to paths; scripts, images and external resources are not supported.

Will PGM keep the source colours?

Colour is converted to grayscale using linear-sRGB luminance and the sRGB transfer curve. Colour channels and transparency are not retained.

What happens to transparent areas?

Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
