  • Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
  • Uses the saved merged RGB/grayscale image. Layers are not recomposited; 16-bit, CMYK and PSB are not supported.

What happens when you convert PSD to PAM?

Rendered composition

Uses the saved merged RGB/grayscale image. Layers are not recomposited; 16-bit, CMYK and PSB are not supported.

HDR to SDR

HDR is rendered to SDR using exposure and Reinhard tone mapping.

Lossless sample storage

Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning. PAM can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. This applies after rendering and sample conversion: it does not guarantee preservation of source precision, colour space or document structure, and cannot undo earlier losses.

Is PSD → PAM right for you?

Good choice when

  • PAM fits your delivery use: Channel-aware image pipelines.
  • You need a rendered delivery copy of the composition.
  • You need an SDR delivery copy and can review its tone mapping.
  • You need a transparency-capable destination and will check its supported variant.

Probably not when

  • You must keep masks, layer effects or editable text.
  • You need the original HDR range for relighting or grading.
  • You assume format-level alpha support guarantees matching transparent edges.
  • You expect lossless encoding to restore lost details or editing structure.

PSD to PAM conversion details

Rendered composition
Uses the saved merged RGB/grayscale image. Layers are not recomposited; 16-bit, CMYK and PSB are not supported.
HDR to SDR
HDR is rendered to SDR using exposure and Reinhard tone mapping.
Transparency representation
The implemented target supports alpha. Display-pixel processing can round translucent samples; archival sample equality is not promised.
Sample precision & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Metadata & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Compression
PSD: Lossless → PAM: Uncompressed PSD: PSD channel compression is lossless, but a document may contain previously lossy source assets. Composite rendering and layer editing are different capabilities; this page does not claim portable animation playback. PAM: Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning.
Transparency
Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
Colour depth
PSD: 8 / 16 / 32 bits/channel → PAM: maxval up to 65535
HDR
PSD: 32-bit workflows
Layers
PSD: Layers & masks
Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
Metadata
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Common questions

Will the editable PSD layers survive?

Uses the saved merged RGB/grayscale image. Layers are not recomposited; 16-bit, CMYK and PSB are not supported.

How will HDR brightness be mapped?

HDR is rendered to SDR using exposure and Reinhard tone mapping.

Does lossless output mean an unchanged source?

Netpbm stores these samples without compression. Reducing colour, thresholding or changing maxval can still lose information before storage; text and binary representations change the layout, not its image meaning. PAM can store its supported image samples without lossy compression. This applies after rendering and sample conversion: it does not guarantee preservation of source precision, colour space or document structure, and cannot undo earlier losses.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
