What happens when you convert ICO to PDF?

Multiple source images

Only one image is decoded; a concatenated image sequence is not exported as a complete set.

Pixels on a PDF page

Output is a one-page raster PDF at 96 DPI, not an editable vector document.

Is ICO → PDF right for you?

Good choice when

  • PDF fits your delivery use: Fixed-layout documents & print.
  • You can choose the source image or part needed for delivery.
  • You need a document page for printing or delivery.
  • You need a transparency-capable destination and will check its supported variant.

Probably not when

  • You require a complete collection, page set or multipart round trip.
  • You expect OCR, vector tracing or a smaller image from a PDF wrapper.
  • You assume format-level alpha support guarantees matching transparent edges.
  • You require identical samples without a defined colour and precision policy.

ICO to PDF conversion details

Multiple source images
Only one image is decoded; a concatenated image sequence is not exported as a complete set.
Pixels on a PDF page
Output is a one-page raster PDF at 96 DPI, not an editable vector document.
Transparency representation
The implemented target supports alpha. Display-pixel processing can round translucent samples; archival sample equality is not promised.
Sample precision & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Metadata & colour
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.
Compression
ICO: Depends on variant → PDF: Depends on variant ICO: ICO compression depends on the embedded image payload. Multiple sizes are alternatives, not animation frames; transparency handling differs between old masks and alpha-capable images. PDF: PDF has no single compression quality. Different streams may use lossless or lossy filters; page rasterization can remove document structure even when the resulting pixels are encoded losslessly.
Transparency
Transparency is replaced with white by default. Change the background in Advanced options.
Multiple images
ICO: Alternative icon sizes → PDF: Page tree
Vector graphics
PDF: Paths & text on pages
Dimensions
Rendered image dimensions are retained within the converter limits; this tool does not offer resizing. Orientation handling depends on the source decoder.
Metadata
Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Common questions

Will every source image be exported?

Only one image is decoded; a concatenated image sequence is not exported as a complete set.

Will PDF turn the image into searchable text or vectors?

Output is a one-page raster PDF at 96 DPI, not an editable vector document.

Are bit depth and colour values guaranteed to match?

Pixel conversion only. Original EXIF, GPS, XMP and ICC profiles are not copied; processing uses 8-bit display pixels.

Will metadata and colour profiles be retained?
